After 17 years of the implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, there are still companies that do not comply with the Act and the Regulations. There are various reasons for not complying:
· Production – Yes, production is what we are in business for. Make money! But to what cost of your employees, insurance and workmen’s compensation benefits?
· Company to small – A company is never too small to comply with legislation. Section 8 of the Act says that every employer is responsible for the health and safety of it employees. If you have one person working for you, you have a responsibility to that employee.
o Are your employee(s) working with machinery, office equipment, chemicals, ladders, etc?
· Health and Safety is expensive – Safety does not have to be expensive to implement, and maintained. The expense that a company will have must not be seen as an expense but as an investment. If you do not have any injuries and employee are happy your productivity level will increase. Employees will want to work for your company if you, the employer care.
· New company – A company is not too new to have a safety system in place. Refer back to Section 8 of the Act, duty of an employer.
This is only a few reasons, but there is a more excuses employers’ use for not complying with the Act.
